What PSI for a Concrete Driveway? And Why PSI Is Not the Point
Short answer. 2500 to 3500 psi is the useful range for concrete. But flow rate in gallons or litres per minute matters as much, and using a rotary surface cleaner matters more than either.
The short answer, then the useful one
For concrete: 2500 to 3500 psi. Below about 2000 psi you will be there a very long time. Above 3500 psi you are into territory where a moment of carelessness marks the slab.
But psi is the number machines are marketed on, and it is not the number that determines whether your driveway ends up evenly clean or covered in stripes.
Flow rate is the half nobody mentions
Pressure breaks the dirt loose. Flow rate carries it away. A machine with high pressure and low flow will loosen material and leave it sitting there, so you end up going over the same area repeatedly.
This is the main practical difference between a consumer machine and a commercial one. A typical domestic electric washer might deliver 1.4 gallons per minute, around 5 litres. A commercial petrol unit delivers 4 gallons per minute or more. Both might claim 3000 psi. The commercial one will clean a driveway in a third of the time, not because it pushes harder but because it moves far more water.
When comparing machines, look for the cleaning units figure, psi multiplied by flow rate. It describes real capability far better than psi alone.
The surface cleaner matters more than the machine
This is the single biggest factor in how a finished driveway looks.
A bare wand concentrates all the force into a narrow line. Move it unevenly, pause, or change the angle, and you get visible bands. Those are the stripes you see on badly cleaned driveways, sometimes called zebra stripes or wand marks, and on concrete they are effectively permanent because you have eroded the surface unevenly.
A rotary surface cleaner is a shrouded disc with two or four jets spinning underneath. It distributes the same energy evenly, cannot easily dwell in one spot, contains the spray, and cleans several times faster. Any contractor doing driveways professionally will have one. If someone turns up to clean your driveway with only a wand, that is worth asking about.
Nozzles, briefly
Tips are colour coded by spray angle. On concrete, a 25 degree green or 40 degree white tip is appropriate. A 15 degree yellow tip is for spot work on stubborn areas.
The red zero degree tip is a pencil jet. It will engrave concrete, destroy timber and take paint off in a stripe. It has almost no legitimate use on a driveway and it is responsible for a great many ruined surfaces.
Turbo or rotary nozzles sit somewhere in between: effective, and easy to mark a surface with if you pause.
Pressure ranges for other surfaces, for context
Concrete and stone paving: 2500 to 3500 psi with a surface cleaner.
Block paving and interlock: 1500 to 2000 psi, because higher pressure blasts out the jointing sand and destabilises the surface.
Brick, modern with hard mortar: 1200 to 1500 psi.
Brick, older with lime mortar: soft wash, not pressure.
Timber decking: 500 to 1200 psi, wide tip, along the grain.
Composite decking: low pressure, check the manufacturer's maximum.
House siding and render: soft wash under 500 psi.
Roofs: soft wash only. Never pressure.
Renting versus hiring someone
A rental machine plus a surface cleaner attachment for a day is a reasonable option if you have one driveway, some patience and the ability to move a heavy machine around.
Where it goes wrong is people renting the machine without the surface cleaner, doing the whole driveway with a wand, and permanently striping it. If you are going to do it yourself, hiring the attachment matters more than hiring the more powerful machine.
